Protected Harvest is a non-profit, independent certification organization, with the principal mission of advancing and certifying the use of sustainable agriculture practices through the development of stringent, transparent, and quantifiable standards. Protected Harvest’s Board of Directors represents some of the most prestigious environmentalists, scientists and food marketers in the country. This partnership offers producers an opportunity to work in collaboration with this credible organization to help develop sustainable agriculture plans that provide realistic and verifiable measurement tools to ensure the integrity of the program.

Our commitment extends to a collaborative project with Protected Harvest of San Diego, CA to develop environmental production standards and certifications that address a long list of sustainability practices for improved soil, water and air quality, as well as reduced physical inputs and the use of renewable resources. As a leader in the mushroom industry, Modern Mushroom Farms was the first mushroom producer to achieve certification from Protected Harvest.

Sustainability
Just a few of the sustainability practices employed by Modern Mushroom Farms include new systems to reduce natural gas and fresh water consumption, as well as a comprehensive plan for recycling. The plan for recycling includes the development of growth medium using recycled materials like recycled wall board and agricultural bi-products such as grape pumice and wheat straw. And to bring the recycling process full circle, all growth medium is used for compost and soil remediation after the mushrooms are harvested.
